Evacuation Strategies & Escape Planning
Understand how to assess and execute a safe evacuation under high-stress conditions. This includes identifying exits, moving efficiently, and helping others evacuate without creating additional risk.

Shelter-In-Place Protocols
When evacuation isn't possible, knowing how to effectively shelter in place can be the difference between survival and exposure. Learn how to secure a space, communicate your location, and remain safe until help arrives.

Hands-On Defense & Last-Resort Response
AVIRT prepares participants for worst-case scenarios — when there is no option but to act. Participants learn practical, high-impact response techniques designed to disrupt an attacker and create opportunity for survival.

Bleeding Control & Trauma Response
Active violence events frequently result in traumatic injuries. AVIRT includes hands-on training in bleeding control, tourniquet application, and immediate trauma care — bridging the gap between the incident and the arrival of emergency services.

How to alert others, contact emergency services effectively, and communicate your location and situation under extreme stress — critical skills that are often overlooked in standard active shooter training.

What is AVIRT and who developed it?
AVIRT (Active Violence Immediate Response Training) is a comprehensive, skills-based active violence preparedness program developed and certified by HSI — the Health & Safety Institute. Is AVIRT the same as active shooter training?
AVIRT is broader than traditional active shooter training. While it covers response to armed attackers, it addresses the full spectrum of active violence events — including edged weapons, vehicular attacks, and other threat types — and incorporates trauma response skills not typically found in standard active shooter courses.
Do I need any prior training or experience to take AVIRT?
No. AVIRT is open to everyone regardless of prior training or experience. The course is designed to be immediately accessible and applicable to participants from all backgrounds.
What certification will I receive?
Upon successful completion of AVIRT, participants receive an HSI-issued certification demonstrating completion of the Active Violence Immediate Response Training program.
