ABOUT THIS COURSE

More than awareness.
real skills that save lives.

Most active violence training stops at awareness — teaching people what to look for but not what to do when the worst actually happens. AVIRT goes further. Developed and certified through HSI (Health & Safety Institute), AVIRT is a comprehensive, skills-based training program that prepares participants to take immediate, effective action during an active violence event.

ERE is an HSI-Approved AVIRT Training Center — one of a select group of certified providers authorized to deliver this curriculum. Our instructors bring real-world emergency response experience to every session, ensuring that what you learn in the classroom translates directly to confident, decisive action when it matters most.

This is not a lecture. This is training.

AVIRT CURRICULUM

what you'll learn

Every skill you walk away with could save a life. Here's what's covered:

01

Threat Recognition & Situational Awareness

Learn to identify warning signs, behavioral indicators, and environmental cues that signal an elevated threat — before violence begins. Early recognition is your first and most powerful tool.

02

Immediate Response Decision-Making

When an active violence event occurs, hesitation costs lives. AVIRT trains participants to make fast, clear decisions — whether to evacuate, shelter in place, or take direct action — and execute them under pressure.

03

Evacuation Strategies & Escape Planning

Understand how to assess and execute a safe evacuation under high-stress conditions. This includes identifying exits, moving efficiently, and helping others evacuate without creating additional risk.

04

Shelter-In-Place Protocols

When evacuation isn't possible, knowing how to effectively shelter in place can be the difference between survival and exposure. Learn how to secure a space, communicate your location, and remain safe until help arrives.

05

Hands-On Defense & Last-Resort Response

AVIRT prepares participants for worst-case scenarios — when there is no option but to act. Participants learn practical, high-impact response techniques designed to disrupt an attacker and create opportunity for survival.

06

Bleeding Control & Trauma Response

Active violence events frequently result in traumatic injuries. AVIRT includes hands-on training in bleeding control, tourniquet application, and immediate trauma care — bridging the gap between the incident and the arrival of emergency services.

07

Communication During an Active Event

How to alert others, contact emergency services effectively, and communicate your location and situation under extreme stress — critical skills that are often overlooked in standard active shooter training.

08

Post-Event Response & Recovery

What to do immediately after an active violence event — including how to interact with responding law enforcement, provide information, and support others in the immediate aftermath.

WHY THIS TRAINING MATTERS

the reality of active violence in America

Active violence events are unpredictable, fast-moving, and devastating. Law enforcement response times — however fast — cannot eliminate the gap between when an event begins and when help arrives. What happens in that gap is determined entirely by the people who are present.

AVIRT was developed in response to this reality. It is built on the understanding that trained, prepared individuals save lives — and that the skills required to respond effectively can be taught, practiced, and retained.

ERE's AVIRT training doesn't just meet a compliance requirement. It creates genuinely prepared people who know exactly what to do when it matters most.

The average active shooter event is over in 3 minutes

Law enforcement average response time is 5–7 minutes

Trained bystanders are consistently shown to improve survival outcomes

AVIRT bridges the gap with real, actionable skills

Is AVIRT the same as active shooter training?

No. AVIRT is open to everyone regardless of prior training or experience. The course is designed to be immediately accessible and applicable to participants from all backgrounds.

What certification will I receive?

Can ERE bring AVIRT training to our location?

Private corporate sessions are built around your specific facility, workforce, and risk profile. We review your physical environment, identify your unique vulnerabilities, and develop scenarios that are directly relevant to your team's day-to-day reality.

Course duration varies based on format and group size. Contact us for specific timing information for both open enrollment and corporate sessions.

Is AVIRT training appropriate for all employees, including those who may find it distressing?

ERE's instructors deliver AVIRT training with professionalism, sensitivity, and care. The training is designed to empower participants — not alarm them. That said, the content addresses real-world scenarios and is intended to be taken seriously. Participants are encouraged to communicate any concerns with the instructor before the session begins.
